I live and work in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where I consult with clinicians, teach trainees in psychiatry at the University of Michigan and Mercy Memorial Hospital (Livonia) and participate in educational and outreach efforts of the, the Mindful Clinical Practice Program at the University of Rochester,.
I've been interested for many years in the boundaries involving physical and emotional health, and meditation, and creativity and the arts. Other longstanding interests have included children's literature and language, the impacts of childhood experiences on adult identity, and the professional and identity development of psychotherapists including psychiatrists and psychoanalysts.
My current interests include understanding how individuals and their therapists may collude to minimize problems and troubles, Buddhist psychology and various meditative practices, children's development in the face of physical illness and handicap, and the issues involved in physical handicap for people of all ages. I worked for several years as the Director of Pediatric Consultation Psychiatry at the University of Michigan's Mott Children's Hospital. I have also studied issues and authored papers in Cross Cultural Mental Health and psychiatric illness in developing countries.
